Hairspray Jr. Monologue Sheet

Auditions Brisbane Junior Theatre 2015

Tracy: Why do they have to be so mean? “You’re short, you’re stout, you’re not council material.” I wear the latest fashions, I keep up with all the styles. I’m teasing my hair as high as I can! Will they give me a chance? Encouragement? Appreciation? No, all I ever hear is ... Detention! Is there no pity for a teen just trying to fit in?

Link: I like these people. But whether or not they’re on TV won’t get me a recording contract…You’ve got everything; brains, talent, personality. Me? I’ve got one chance to get seen nationwide. Tracy, Saturday night is everything I’ve worked for. I’m not gonna throw it away. C’mon, I’m leaving and you gotta go too.

Velma: Bang your drum Bonzo, no one cares.  You crashed the studio once and got us all arrested. But we won’t let that happen again. And don’t get anymore ideas about showing up at the special. I have armed guards surrounding the eventorium to make sure Tracy can’t get within 100 miles of that place.

Corny Collins: And now for the talent portion of the competition where the frontrunner gals present a dance of their own creation. Presently it appears Amber Von Tussle and Tracy Turnblad are neck and neck. But according to the latest police bulletins, Miss Turnblad is still at large.

Edna: Oh, Sure! You're a visionary inventor saving the day. Tracy's a teen idol reshaping the world. And what am I? I had a dream too, you know. I use to make all my own clothes, remember? But I always dreamed that one day I would put out my own line of queen-sized dress patterns.

Amber: No, she can't be Miss Hairspray! She's the before in the Metrecal diet ad, and I'm the after; and afters always win! No! He can't sing to her …because everyone knows that whenever he sings, he sings to me, he's completely involved with me, see? You people are ignoring the laws of nature!

Motormouth: So you tried once and you failed. We can't get lazy when things get crazy. Children, you were not the first to try and you won't be the last, but I am here to tell you that I'm gonna keep lining up until someday somebody breaks through. And I've been looking at that door a lot longer than you.

Good Morning Baltimore:

Good morning Baltimore Every day's like an open door
Every night is a fantasy Every sound's like a symphony
Good morning Baltimore And some day when i take to the floor
The world's gonna wake up and see Baltimore and me.

Characters:

TRACY TURNBLAD- A young lady with big hair and an even bigger personality! She is the hero of our story and she is sweet but also strong in her convictions. She is bigger in size than the other girls, but she isn’t shy about it – she can still dance with the best of them!

VELMA VON TUSSLE -A carbon copy of Amber – just twenty years older and meaner! She is most concerned with making sure her daughter wins Miss Teenage Baltimore.

WILBUR TURNBLAD -Edna’s loving husband and Tracy’s supportive father who just wants the best for his girls.

AMBER VON TUSSLE- She’s a prom queen nightmare! She is definitely “The Corny Collins Show” favorite, but she is competitive and has a bad attitude.

CORNY COLLINS -The host of “The Corny Collins Show,” and a Baltimore celebrity; Foremost, Corny is a charmer.

* COUNCIL MEMBERS- BRAD, TAMMY, FENDER, SKETCH, SHELLEY, IQ, BRENDA and LOU ANN; The famed teenage performers on "The Corny Collins Show."

* EDNA TURNBLAD -Tracy’s loving mother who doesn’t spend much time outside the house. She works days and nights as a laundress in her home, and her lack of social interaction has made her a bundle of nerves.

* LINK LARKIN- Baltimore’s biggest heartthrob, and Tracy’s dream guy. Link is considered the best performer in town. Think of any teenage idol who is able to reduce girls to tears – there’s your guy!

* LITTLE INEZ STUBBS- Seaweed’s little sister and a great breakout role for a young African American actress.

MOTORMOUTH MAYBELLE- the face of the Civil Rights Movement and sings the beautiful anthem, “I Know Where I’ve Been.”

** MR. PINKY- Owner of a ladies’ clothing shop and is a salesperson inside and out – he is always the first to give a compliment.

PENNY PINGLETON -Tracy’s fun and sheltered sidekick. She is a young lady caught between her mother’s very strict rules and her own wants and desires to be just another teenage girl.

PRUDY PINGLETON -Penny’s eccentric but loving mother, who wants the best for her daughter but is extreme in her means.

SEAWEED J. STUBBS- The object of Penny’s affections, and together, they are determined to defy the segregation laws of the 1960s.

THE DYNAMITES -(JUDINE, KAMILAH & SHAYNA) A dynamic musical trio, iconic of the Motown era and the 1960s. Think the Supremes.
