BJT 2015 Annie Monologues Auditions
Annie: This locket, my mom and dad left it with me when…when they left me at an orphanage. And there was a note too. They’re comin back for me. And oh, I know being here with you for Christmas, I’m real lucky. But I don’t know how to say it. The one thing I want in all the world… (Crying) Is to find my mother and father and to be like other kids with folks of my own.
Warbucks: Hello Barney, yes I got in an hour ago. No Detroit and Chicago. Barney I didn’t like what I saw out there. Factories shut down. My factories shut down. You’re darn tootin. When I’m not makin money nobody is. Barney, your pal Roosevelt has got to do something drastic. He’s got to come up with a new approach, a new plan, a new something.
Miss Hannigan: Oh Thank you officer, Oh poor punkin out in that freezin cold with just that thin sweater. I hope you didn’t catch influenza. Thanks so much again officer…Now I’m gonna have your head and the next time you’ll walk out that door it will be 1953. What’s the one thing I always taught you? Never tell a lie! For what you done I could get fired. You’ll pay for it I promise.
Grace: I am the private secretary to Oliver Warbucks…The Oliver Warbucks and Mr. Warbucks has decided to invite an orphan to spend the Christmas holidays at his home. And I’m here to select one for him. She should be friendly and cheerful and age doesn’t matter say eight or nine. No eleven would be perfect oh and I almost forgot., Mr. Warbucks prefers red-headed children.
Bert Healy: Thank you Annie, Thank youuu Annie! On America’s favorite radio program. “The hour of smiles” starring your old softy Bert Healy. Well I see by that old clock on the wall our time has gone by faster than you can say… Oxydent the toothpaste of the stars that makes your teeth Hollywood bright!
Rooster: Excuse me ma’am are you the lady that runs this here orphanage? Ma’am was you workin here eleven years ago? Well we had terrible troubles back then. We had to head north to Canada. And we had to leave a baby here on the front stoop….(Crows like Rooster) Gotcha sis! Fooled ya Aggie and now we’re gonna fool Warbucks too.
Lily: Honey, we’re your mom and dad! You never knew it dear but you're Annie Mudge. We had to go away and we couldn’t bring along no baby. Oh Annie, all the years I dreamed of holdin you in my arms again. Ralph, look Annie’s wearin the locket! Oh thank God Ralph, she’s our Annie.
President Roosevelt: My friends, I say again, the only thing we have to fear is fear itself…Every cloud has a silver lining…You’re never full dressed without a smile! Well at least we’ve agreed on one thing. The situation is hopeless and getting worse.
Audition Song: Tomorrow Annie Jr. Synopsis Annie is an 11-year
old orphan girl living in Depression era New York City. Late one April night Molly, one of the orphans, is jolted
awake by dreams of her parents. Annie shows the girl a note her parents left
her in one half of a heart-shaped locket, which promises that they will one day come for
her ("Maybe"). But Annie realizes
that her "folks are never coming for [her]" and decides to find them
by escaping, but is quickly thwarted by Miss Hannigan, the cruel woman who owns
the orphanage. The children are forced to clean the orphanage at this early
hour ("It's the Hard Knock Life"). When Bundles McCloskey, the
laundryman, comes to pick up the orphan's sheets, Annie escapes in a laundry
basket, and the orphans celebrate her escape ("It's the Hard Knock Life -
Reprise"). Annie is in St. Mark's Place as city dogcatchers pursue stray dogs. She finds a
sad-faced mutt who has been wandering alone. "They're after me, too,"
she tells the dog, and then assures him that "Everything's gonna be
fine." ("Tomorrow") Officer Ward of the New York Police
Department suspects that Annie's dog is a stray, but she tells him that the dog
is hers: "I call him Sandy because of his nice sandy color." Sandy responds to his new name when he is called by Annie, and Officer Ward is reluctantly
persuaded that the dog indeed belongs to Annie. Annie loses track of Sandy, and is found by the police and is taken back to the orphanage where she is
reprimanded by Miss Hannigan ("Little Girls"). Mere minutes later,
Grace Farrell, secretary to billionaire Oliver Warbucks, arrives at the orphanage. Warbucks wishes to have an orphan
stay at his home for Christmas, so Annie is taken by Grace. Though the servants
at Warbucks' mansion welcome Annie warmly ("I Think I'm Gonna Like
it Here"), Warbucks is more hesitant to accept Annie. The two strengthen
their bond during a trip ("N.Y.C."). Warbucks quickly decides that he
wishes to adopt Annie. Hannigan is clearly angered over this news, and with the
help of her conman brother Rooster and his girlfriend Lily St. Regis,
the three develop a plan to get rich from Annie ("Easy Street"). To break the ice for
a request for adoption, Warbucks buys Annie a new heart locket. When the girl approaches
hysteria as he attempts to take the old locket off, Warbucks realizes that
Annie still wishes to find her parents. He promises Annie that he will find her
mother and father ("You Won't Be An Orphan For Long"). The pair go on a radio
show to initiate a public plea for Annie's parents. Warbucks offers $50,000 to
anyone who can prove that they are Annie's parents - or, whoever has the second
half of the locket . The radio broadcast is heard by the orphans ("You're
Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile "), as well as Miss Hannigan. Rooster
and Lily plan to pose as Annie's parents, and with Hannigan's knowledge of the
second half of the locket, take the reward money and leave town ("Easy
Street - Reprise"). After a paper from
the F.B.I. shows that it will be impossible to trace Annie's
parents through the locket - over 90,000 were made - and the 1,236 people
claiming to be Annie's parents turn out to be liars, Warbucks decides to adopt
Annie "I Don't Need Anything But You"). During an improvised
party celebrating the eve of Annie's adoption, Lily and Rooster enter disguised
as "Ralph Mudge" and "Shirley Mudge", and claim to be
Annie's parents. As the couple has a false birth certificate and the other locket half, Warbucks begrudgingly accepts
the two as Annie's parents. Warbucks invites the pair to come pick her up the
next day, on Christmas morning. Warbucks, and
surprisingly Annie, are saddened over this turn of events ("Maybe -
Reprise"). New news from the F.B.I. is quickly received - Annie's real
parents, David and Margaret Bennett, have died. Lily, Rooster, and their
accomplice Hannigan are all arrested. All celebrate the adoption of
Annie by Warbucks, and the re-uniting of Sandy and Annie. Annie Jr. Character
Descriptions Annie – Annie is a tough streetwise urchin who is, nevertheless;
vulnerable when she thinks she might
lose what has become most important to her: a newfound “family” who loves her. Throughout
the show she shows independent, needy, maternal, and hopeful qualities.
Although she is at
times aggressive or crafty, there is no doubt that Annie is a friendly and caring child. Miss
Hannigan – Miss
Hannigan is the evil orphanage
matron. Her distaste for her job and the children is
obvious in every line she speaks, every song she sings, and every move she
makes. She is
predictable and funny in her ridiculous, cruel ways. Oliver
Warbucks – A
powerful, self-assured billionaire who always has his mind on business. While
sometime gruff and abrupt he has a kind heart. At first he is awkwardly
affectionate toward Annie, but he soon finds
himself completely charmed by her. Grace
Farrell – She is
the beautiful and loyal private secretary to Oliver Warbucks. Grace is mature,
calm, and classy. She is businesslike when dealing with Miss Hannigan and
Warbucks, yet
maternal toward Annie.
Rooster
Hannigan– Miss
Hannigan's despicable brother. Rooster is flashy and self-assured. His “moves”
are as smooth as a gambler’s, sly, and deceiving. Rooster must have a
convincing New York and Southern accent. Lily St.
Regis – Lily is
Rooster’s airhead girlfriend. She is always distracted, although she manages to
pick up on any conversation involving money. Lily must have a convincing New York accent. Orphans - These girls are gritty, neglected, vulnerable, yet basically honest, and potentially lovable.
They mischievous fun with each other and also have “sibling-style” fights. Molly - The littlest orphan. Pepper - The toughest girl in the orphanage. Duffy - The
